Tough new looks, more tech, higher prices.
Mitsubishi Motors Australia has finally revealed local pricing and specifications for the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport range, with some welcome technology features, revised styling and as you guessed it, a bit of a price hike.
2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport drive-away pricing:
- GLS 5-seat auto – $45,990
- GLX 5-seat auto – $52,490
- GLS 7-seat auto – $53,990
- Exceed 7-seat auto – $59,990
Heading up the outside design changes is the “Dynamic Shield” grille and headlight setup that we’ve come to see on the current generation Mitsubishi Triton ute, as well new front and rear bumper designs, and they’ve also *thankfully* reduced the vertical tail light assembly. The side steps are also bolstered up higher to assist in ground clearance.
On the inside, occupants are greeted by a new 8.0-inch touchscreen unit that still operates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with TomTom satellite navigation available and the top-of-the-range Exceed variant.
There is also more storage in front of the gear shifter, and under it in the updated Pajero Sport. On the top of the range Exceed variant, the electric tailgate can now be opened by a foot-sweep motion, or on the new Mitsubishi Remote Control phone app with Apple Watch integration.
The highly useful is able to inform drivers if you’ve left the headlights or hazard lights on, a window down, a door open, as well as being able to remotely check fuel use, and tell your car to turn the headlights if you can’t find it in a dark car park.
Safety wise, the 2020 Pajero Sport offers a five-star ANCAP crash rating, and seven on board airbags. All 2020 Pajero Sport models also offer radar powered forward collision mitigation (autonomous emergency braking). There’s also a new radar-based blind-spot monitoring system available, as well as lane-change warning and rear cross-traffic alert.
Power comes from the same 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine as before, producing 133kW/430Nm, although it has been played with, and features a new aluminium alloy cylinder block to reduce weight. The eight-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddles also carries over from the previous model.
Mitsubishi’s familiar Super Select 4WD-II system electronically switches between drive modes and when in full time 4-wheel-drive mode, will split engine torque 40 per cent to the front wheels and 60 per cent to the rears. There is a 4HLc mode which when engaged will lock the centre differential, with a proper low-range gear set, which itself unlocks various engine/transmission/brake settings for varying off-road conditions.
